November General Meeting with Dianne Reed
November 14 @ 12:00 - 14:30
Join your fellow members for our monthly General Meeting – this month in the daytime at our favorite location – the Allied Museum. Our speaker for this month is Dianne Reed with her amazing story of survival, recovery and strength.
Dianne began her overseas experience in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia in June of 1997. During her 8 years in Saudi Arabia, Dianne led women’s tour groups and served two terms as President of the American Women of the Eastern Province (AWEP) as well as other board positions. She was also a substitute teacher at the American School in Ras Tanura and Dhahran. She continues to be involved in the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO) as well as volunteer work. On May 29, 2004 Dianne was shot in both legs while running from Al Qaeda terrorist’s that had attacked the compound where she lived in Khobar. Her right leg sustained significant injuries that hospitalized her for 6 weeks and ultimately resulted in nine surgeries to repair and reconstruct her right calf. The long journey of surgeries ended when Dianne crossed the finish line at the Dubai Marathon in 2010. She has spoken to a variety of groups on numerous occasions about the experience. Her desire is to foster a greater understanding and cooperation between cultures in order to reduce acts of terrorism. She is currently completing a book entitled “Fear Is Not An Option.” It is the story of her journey from near death to full recovery and beyond with a global message that will challenge what we think we know about terrorism.
Her talk will cover:
- Description of the incident in Al-Khobar
- Choices to be made after such an incident
- The healing process both physically and mentally
- The importance of support from friends and family
- Turning tragedy into a way to help and motivate others
- How communities can help foster the healing process
