Newcomers Orientation

Fairly new to Berlin? Or still trying to figure it out? This orientation is designed to help newcomers quickly orient and enjoy the rich and varied experiences of living in Berlin. The program has one main module, Managing Daily Life and three others to choose from: Hitting the Ground Running, Berlin with Children, and Living Abroad as a US Citizen.

Location: In Charlottenburg, address to be given after registration (U2: Neu-Westend)

AWC Berlin members: free of charge

Guests: 10 Euro (applied to membership dues if join AWC)

MAIN MODULE: Managing daily life: This module covers daily life, with helpful tips on German culture and customs, maintaining a household, transportation, shopping and consumer life, medical care, keeping in touch with family and friends back home, and social life in Berlin.

OPTIONAL MODULES:

  1. Hitting the ground running: This module is for newcomers who are here without the support of a relocation agency. We will cover the administrative requirements (i.e., residence registration, visas, radio/TV tax, opening a bank account, getting health insurance, phone/internet options), and finding and setting up a home (from search to utilities to furnishings).
  2. Living in Berlin with children: Kita & schools, Kindergeld, extra-curricular activities (sports, Scouts, music, etc.), entertainment, travel
  3. Living abroad as a US citizen: Your responsibilities while living abroad, including voting, tax and FinCen filing requirements, keeping in touch with the US.

AWC Berlin members: free of charge

Guests: 10 Euro (applied to membership fee if join AWC within 24 hours of workshop)
